A Journey Through Time: The Church of Saint Lazarus, Larnaca – Cyprus
The History of the Church of Saint Lazarus
The Church of Saint Lazarus, located in Larnaca, Cyprus, is a testament to the rich history and religious significance of the region. This late-9th-century church belongs to the Church of Cyprus, an autocephalous Greek Orthodox Church. It is named after Lazarus of Bethany, a New Testament figure who was raised from the dead by Jesus.
According to Eastern Orthodox tradition, Lazarus was forced to flee Judea due to rumoured plots on his life and found refuge in Cyprus. Here, he was appointed by Paul the Apostle and Barnabas as the first Bishop of Kition, now known as Larnaca. He lived for thirty more years before his death and burial in Larnaca.
The Architecture
The Church is a perfect exponent of Byzantine architecture. Built from limestone, it features an archway made from the same type of stone. The church’s interior structure is divided into three aisles with bulky double pillars and arched openings. These pillars bear the weight of the domes, forming the central aisle, while the north and south aisles bear a semi-cylindrical roof, intersected by cross-vaults.

From its inception in the late 9th century, through the Frankish and Venetian rule, to the Ottoman rule, and finally to the present day, the church has remained a beacon of spiritual solace and historical significance.
